FMP Interview research

What makes my subjects interesting and what is going to make the film interesting for the audience?

I first met Lee at an event in Lancaster and started chatting to him about what he does. From their we got in touch via email. I spoke to him about the project and he suggested meeting up to have a proper face to face chat about my FMP. He said at that point that he didn’t imagine that he would have been able to help out much because he was on a really busy schedule. But he said that he would answer some questions on the computer if I sent some over. When we spoke during the meeting, he said that he pass on the details about the FMP to his friend and collaborator Richard. Lee later said that if he had perhaps an hour or so then he may be able to answer those questions in an interview format. I then met up with Richard to discuss the film project and he said that he would be interested in the project and would be happy to help. From their we spoke over email and worked out a date for the filming. I also spoke to Lee via email and worked out a date for filming also. In between the filming dates for Lee and Richard, I spoke to one of the College students; Jordan about the project and also said that he would be interested in the the project. I spoke to him one or two times in College but we agreed on a date fairly quickly. The filming dates for both Lee and Richard were on the same day with only a short gap between them. The filming date for Jordan was the next day.

Lee spoke about what kind of sound/music work he does and it was very varied and interesting. Lee said that he had worked on a project where he and Richard (who I hadn’t heard of at that point) had composed music for several live screenings of the 1927 silent film ‘Metropolis’, which was very interesting to hear about, even though it was quite a brief conversation about it at first. He also said that he does loads of varying work with sound and music, such as playing many different instruments, composing and writing music for moving image, sound recording, sound design, etc.

Richard spoke about the ‘Metropolis’ project as well, but I think that he wanted to hear as much about me and the project as possible. But I listened to a lot of Richards song’s and collaborated songs on SoundCloud which I thought were really good. So I thought that it would be interesting to get an insight into how he produced and composed these tracks.

Jordan like, Richard was very keen to hear about the project, but I thought separated himself from many other music students was that he was writing and composing music specifically for film.

I think from a viewers perspective, it meant that the project was very different to a typical music programme that you may see on TV, because the project was focused on music production, but at the same time it also heavily looked at sound and music for moving image as well as sound production such as sound design.

I think that the questions were possibly the most important part of the pre-production process because I had to ask very specific questions to get very specific answers from the subjects.

FMP Research

The research that I embedded in this blog post clearly demonstrates how my idea and vision for my film has progressed throughout the project. The very first videos’ are videos that I watched just for a bit of inspiration and to see what kind of sound and music films are out their. The first set of video’s that I watched are video’s that focus on sound designers or people who work on sound, one focal subject. My first idea was to follow a sound designer and shadow them for a bit. I then started developing my idea slowly. I wanted to make the video for relatable for everyone watching. I wanted to pose a question to the audience and get them thinking. I started looking at experiments that I could conduct as part of my FMP. I then started thinking about the psychology of sound and why people feel certain way’s because of music.

At this point in the research I started to look more at the psychology of sound and music as opposed to fully shadowing a sound designer. I also started to look at experiments that involve sound and music, in order to gain some ideas about possible experiments that I could conduct.

I think at this point in the research, I had pretty much abandoned the possibility of conducting an experiment and possibly looking more at the reasons and explanations as to the psychology of sound and music and why we feel certain ways after listening to music and hearing certain sounds. I think that by offering an explanation it would be interesting but overall it would be frustrating because I think that everyone wants to believe more in the magic of music and it’s power and that people are less interested in why people feel certain ways and are more interested in hearing what people think about music and why it is important to them.

At this point in the research I had slightly altered my idea. I decided to pose more of an overall theme. The theme an argument and a question; computer based music vs orchestra/acoustic recordings and the future of the music and film industries. This was because I thought that I would make my FMP more interview based but have more of a theme and a question as opposed to a loosely structured narrative.

During the shoots when it is just me and the subject. I will only be using one camera to film the interviews. So what I may do is I will line up the camera to film them from the angle I want and then I will move positions to face them as if I am the interviewer and then tell the subject to keep facing that position. Then I will return to the camera to see how it looks and when good, I will leave the camera to film. And I will sit where the subject is facing, so I know how it looks on the camera.

FMP additional shot ideas

These were a few ideas that I came up with when thinking about additonal shots that I could get which would have been filmed on different days to the shoots with Lee, Jordan, and Richard

chamber_orchestra I could record a small orchestra performance.

East-Side I could record a sequence of various first person shots. These shots could pan forward as I walk forwards with the camera, to make the audience feel like they are ones who are walking.

Appearance_of_sky_for_weather_forecast,_Dhaka,_Bangladesh I could film a time-lapse of the sky and only the sky. This means that it can act similarly to the no visual sequence, but mix things up a bit. It wouldn’t be visually distracting for a film about sound seeing as it would be the same shot for 1/2 a minute or so, while someone talks over it.

 

 

 

FMP Introduction

(I created this video about 2 months ago)

This is a short video that I created, envisioning the kind of introduction that I might like to go for in the documentary.It is a very poetic kind of introduction.

I want their to be a strong presence of imagery, sound and dialogue. This means that the introduction will be predominantly poetic. So I think that shooting several time-lapses will really make the presence of imagery stronger. I think that slow or fast footage works better at times than standard footage when alongside a strong musical presence.

The main purpose of the introduction is to let the viewers know what they are watching. The viewers could be easily confused, thinking that they are watching something that is predominantly about me following a sound professional.

However I think that it is important that I let people know in the introduction that this documentary will also be exploring the scientific side of things. Even though people may not be interested in science, I think that people will still be curious as to the scientific explanations of why sound triggers certain emotional responses. I think it is an interesting topic and people will want to find out more, even if they aren’t completely interested.

I think that by using dialogue from a sound psychologist, it will help make sure that the music’s presence is not felt too strongly. I think that it will also let people know for sure that sound is being studies from two different sides,so I think it is better to include interview extracts from both the sound psychologist and sound professional in the interview. However I think that it will also be a good way to grab people’s attention because I think that by having someone explaining the scientific reasons for the emotional connection with sound, people will self-consciously be aware of the effect that the sound/music is having on them. This will make people want to keep viewing to find out more. Because sound is something that is perhaps understated in the minds of many and by hearing these words they will be aware of it and will be interested in finding out more.

With regards to the actual song that I use at the beginning, that will be really important in the self conscious awareness of the viewers. The music that is used will define whether or not the introductory scene is poetic or not. And I need to make sure that I know how much is too much and whether the music is too powerful and I also need to know how much is too little and whether it is no longer ‘poetic’. At the same time I also need to know whether or not the song helps the viewers to be self aware of the affect that the sound/music is having on them.
